Jim- sorry to say this is not a Military piece, but most likely a theatrical made helmet.

Usually when a neighbor says they have a 'spiked helmet', one of these turns up. Makes for a real letdown... unless perhaps I can sell it to that museum 'pointy' posted for $185!

these were used in costume dress for various fraternities, Oddfellows , masonic and suchlike.
