Pioneer Batt 7 is Prussian, formed 1816, based in Koln, VII Army Korps. They would have a black and white Prussian and Reichs kokarde, not this. The wappen was white metal. The kokarde is correct for IR 96, II Batt. Reuss it looks original.
Although I have been a collector military items for nearly sixty years, I am very new to pickelhaubes and thought that I would like to add some to my collection.
I didn't realise what a minefield pickelhaubes are.
Is there much chance of getting a correct original Kokade or should I buy a reproduction or thirdly should I paint the one I have?
All of the metal fittings are white metal and the pickelhaube is dated WPR 7 what looks like 1908 and 1909 on the rear visor.
I would not repaint the one you have, original Prussian ones are usually easy to pick up. If you post photos of both sides of the one you have, maybe someone here can let you know if it's original. If it is, I would expect it to be worth more than a Prussian one.
Unfortunately Derek, the UK is in fact a minefield of faked helmets dating back to the early 70's. Your best bet is to keep doing what you did....post pics here and get some help before you buy. It would be nice to see some pics of your PB 7 helmet especially the markings on the rear visor.
Now that Derek is a very nice Pioneer OR's helmet. The WPB stands for Westfalisches Pioneer Battalion #7. Founded 1816, based at Koln and part of the VII Army Korps. Can't read the dates but the earliest one would be the year the helmet was accepted into the Battalion stores.
Excellent helmet Derek, well done! As an aside, it appears that this battalion made a habit of stamping WPB 7. We have a list of Regt markings and the example we have from PB7 is the same as yours. Usually and I have one in my collection its just PB#. Mine is from PB29.
