Well, that is exactly the diameter of the kokarden on my M15, and M95 Sachsen helmets.
And those are the originals, so I would say 48mm is correct.

According the official dress code, in 1897 the diameter of the cocades for all ranks has been reduced to 48mm, but older cocades were still allowed to wear. So other diameters could be original too.

Received the helmet today. Good news - only one set of holes. Bavarian Wappen fits them nicely. Hopefully a proper Saxon one will as well. Holes are about 6 cm or 2 and 2/8 inches apart.
One strange thing is that the posts are slightly larger than any of my other helmets and none of my repro straps will fit over them.

Got home early from holidays yesterday and happy day, both my Wappen from James, and some original Kokarden from kpemig were waiting for me. The helmet is now as it should be and looks great. Funny, thought I was getting a Bavarian and ended up with a great Saxon instead. Sometimes things are just meant to be!
