The helmet was originally found at an estate sale in North Carolina. It had been in a box in an attic. It was an all complete helmet but the long storage had caused the visor stitching to fail and the spike , strap and cockades we’re laying loose in the box. Also it was quite dirty. AOK obtained this from a fellow collector who had originally found it for sale. He carefully cleaned and restitched it, but did NOT over clean it, just carefully removed dirt and dust. It is now in great shape with nothing loose. The leather strap was dried out but the buckles remained. The strap has been replaced with new leather. The spike has has one small bump on the left side but it does not change how it fits to the leather. The top of the spike is blunted as you can see in the photo.
The helmet is an all original piece. The Hesse Cockade on this helmet is an original, with touched up paint. I replaced with an untouched cockade thought it may not be as clean. It’s very attractive and was listed with a less accurate, brief overview as compared to Randy’s detailed description on inquiry.
After WW2 the US Army used the 115th Kaserne in Darmstadt as their base. Many of the issues WWI helmets were still in storage there. Its assumed this is one of the many that were taken home as a souvenir.
Opinions are welcome from the experts. I’m not expert on Pickelhaube. It look nice and wish I could fix the damage to the cruciform base on top. The first photo is taken in my room. The others were supplied by Randy.

That's an excellent helmet Charles! Congratulations!
I only have a Hessen M15 in my collection, other Hessians still fail to be with me. They will though, it takes time to buy helmets of this quality.

A very nice helmet! Regards, Coert.

It looks excellent, Charles. Is this the original cockade? It looks quite new. What are the markings? It does not look like the typical RBA18 model (war time). JR115? Difficult to make out as the picture shows strong light reflection and is overexposed.

IMO this is one of the best helmets that a collector can own .
You made a good purchase
Also thanks for your description .
I did not know that the IR 115 barracks were used by the U S Army
While a very rare helmet this explains why they do show up from time to time

It came with a repainted/retouched cockade so I replaced with a an untouched one I’m lucky to have in my collection.
I’ll take more photos

More photos - there appear to be stamps over stamps. Looks like inked 1912 and stamped(?) 1913 into the leather. Not sure what it’s called but similar to using a leather stamping tool I see an X or cross, 4K, an H, a 1B stamped, an 8 in the corner and another that looks like a J.R. Or J.P. 443ECC46-DF3B-4890-A541-1E2613122DC4.jpeg16D28880-B73E-4BDA-8621-3E73EA78E8E3.jpeg66CE5C23-9CE8-45D4-9F31-52170669D180.jpeg9631AB2F-3825-43E8-AE5E-287247824380.jpeg4A938576-D10C-4B3D-9909-DD655BFD864D.jpeg2DB82FDB-61A4-4611-8DBD-9513102805EB.jpegC20C6E8D-30D7-4659-8C08-C60704281BFB.jpeg2EC2D510-2C8D-4C18-A23D-6561AC175FA4.jpeg771A1075-CDD5-4886-8C07-DA78D200DF05.jpeg

Would that be 8. J. P. ?
As you know, because of shortage of metal helmets, some Jaeger zu Pferde also wore leather Pickelhauben. Principally, Prussian Dragoner and occasionally infantry helmets. Therefore, you sometimes encounter such helmets with JzP markings, including 8 J P. I have never heard that hey also wore Hessian helmets though, which sounds far-fetched !

Very nice Charles, congratulations on a "must have" helmet for any serious pickelhaube collector. The only surprise for me, is the use of a neusilber flat head split brad to secure the rear spine tang instead of a screw post and square nut. However, as we all know with pickelhauben, there are always exceptions in manufacture.

That is amazing, Charles.

A superlative and rare helmet. You are very fortunate to have obtained that!

Congratulations on a fantastic score!

The domed studs for the cruciform base are loose but I can’t tighten because theyre somehow seized.
Good for you Charles. I know you were eager to find a nice Hessen. If you’re tempted to tighten those nuts, that can go bad in seconds. One twist and ‘snap’ the solder let’s go. Breaking a stud or Brad will ruin your day. Very happy for your score. Well done.
