We tend to think of the three Prussian units that wore tombac helmets but being interested in German States period headgear and seeing the recent post by Dragoner of the outstanding Prussian Garde du Corps officer's helmet he acquired I thought I would share a discovery I made today. Its an 1847 painting in the Museumslandschaft Hessen Kassel of Hessian Garde du Corps Lieutenant Friedrich Wilhelm Freiherr von Verschuer

I have never seen any pictures of this helmet much less an original and wondered if anyone else had any or if any are published in color in works that I am unaware of. I have many questions. For example, were these the same as helmets produced for the Prussian GdK? The plate appears to have been the Order of the Golden Lion and Knotel's print refers to this. This officer's version has polychrome detailing.. enameled or painted in the center of a silver star. What is the enlisted version look like? Was it also detailed in color or was it monochrome in metal. Was the medallion separate from the star.

There's an interesting biography of Friederich Wilhelm as he seems to have survived in the Grand Elector's army right up to 1866.

Some years ago we visited Schloss Friedrichstein at Bad Wildungen-near Kassel (Hessen-Germany)

Great Hessen-Kassel exhibition. Here some Garde du Corps items. And an Infantry and Artillery helmet !
Bad photographer !!! Sorry.

J-L Larcade Volume II: pages 111 and 112.
Indeed: the shape resembles the Prussian G d C helmets.

Thank you so very much, very generous!! Interesting variations on officer spike and so forth. Graphic documentation always shows the plume. Yet another elegant force that entirely evaporated with 1866. Examining the side view of one of the helmets in your photographs, I spot some silver trim over the ear on one and threaded screw posts on another which suggests that either they are getting these upgraded from the version in the painting dated at 1847 or even replacing them according to Prussian regulations.
