they did have the vent on the rear spine; an exception for Dragoner).

Larcade wrote that this rear vent has been first introduced on the hessian dragoon helmets in the year 1895, as the five vent holes in the spike neck. This was exactly the same for Württemberg dragoons but never for Preußen, Baden, Oldenburg and Mecklenburg dragoons.
Second thing: from 1895 on, the parade Trichter remains fluted on hessien dragoon helmets. All foot units wore then a plain Trichter.

nzef 1940 should confirm us that the convex chinscales are german silver.

Philippe, my DR26 Wuertemberg helmet marked 1913 does not have the vented spine but the usual two "nails"...

:-s Actually, it was the 117th who was awarded the black plume.

But for the love of God is it silver or brass ?

Ed, you are right, IR117 wore the Haarbusch, but so did IR116. I know that Laine's book states that it did not, but I think this is a mistake.

Bruno,
this will not be the last time, the "written" being in contradiction with the "observed"....Especially with imperial cavalry helmets...Regulations were not always 100% applied. The old elements were first used on new helmets. Nothing was thrown away in the german army.
JLL wrote that thing about the rear vent on post 1895 württemberg helmets in his Tome II, page 130.

Oh Ok Bruno , but are you sure 116 should bear flat chinscales ?

This was the regulation for all Hessian infantry regiments from 1897, Ed. We know by experience and from JL Larcade, though, that this was not followed by officers (except for those in JR115) who kept the curved chinscales. So many variations and particularities among Hessian helmets...

If all brass, then only one possibility remains: TB18 helmet (Train Bataillon 18), with garrison in Darmstadt.
