Leibgarde-Infanterie-Regiment (1. Grossherzoglich Hessisches) Nr. 115. Beautiful privately purchased helmet, likely for a well-heeled One-Year Volunteer. Frosty EM wappen in officer quality, with the extra rows of laurels and oak leaves unique to this regiment, the Star of the Order of Ludwig, and the “1621” bandeau celebrating the regiment’s founding (officially, the oldest regiment in the army). Silvered fittings throughout, with an elegant, fluted Hessian spike. Immaculate interior, and mint officer-grade brown ribbed silk liner. No extra holes. Excellent, bright Reich and Hessen cockades. A beautiful example of one of the most aesthetically pleasing regimental helmets.
Of additional interest: The original owner laid a carefully folder section of newspaper behind the sweatband to adjust the fit, dated May 22, 1904! It’s almost impossible to date non-Kammer helmets absent some little label or other clue.
