Hessian M15 with cruciform base and fluted spike

There is a large amount of satisfaction for a collector, when you buy a helmet which is missing some pieces and over time you manage to find these and complete it. This is especially true when dealing with a rare helmet such as this Hessen M15. Congratulations Gabe.

Thanks, it’s a good feeling. I have a few others I’ve been working on that I am going to post in the next few weeks.

There are two schools of thought regarding this issue. Some collectors buy the best and complete helmets so they don’t have to bother with problems. Others like myself enjoy the challenge of repair and looking for the missing pieces. There is no right or wrong approach

An excellent helmet Gabe! I also have a M15 Hessen, with the cruciform base, but it has the prussian spike on it.
I have been on the hunt for the Hessen spike for several years, to no avail though.
I will find one eventually, so the hunt goes on!

It's not a problem. A great many period photos show Hessians with Prussian spikes, and even with Prussian helmets, but fortunately the belt buckle restores the truth.

I know my friend, it is quite common to find them with a Prussian spike, also with a round base.
but being a bit old-fashioned, I would like to find a fluted spike for my Hessen M15.
But they are very hard to find, the last one I saw for sale went for over 600$ on Ebay, some 3 or 2 years ago..
Only the spike alone..

600 bucks for a fluted spike it seems you're not the only who is looking.

That's a bit extreme IMO; I just saw one in a lot of parts at auction that went much much cheaper. Since I know you need one, I will try and find one for you much cheaper. My Hessen helm has a round base and Prussian style spike much like the one in the photo above showing the soldier from the 116.

I do know how you feel, I have an M15 for Bavarian heavy calvary with the cruciform base and I wouldn't be happy unless it had the fluted spike which it does.

Wow Amy, what a show! I'm in love.
I'm looking for the model 15 artillery for years, and I havent had any luck.
