How it started: Kochgeschirr

This is how my WW1 interest started. In 1972, as a 26 years young man under the benign guidance of my father who had an enormous knowledge of everthing pertaining to the battles around Verdun, I dug this German mess tin AKA Kochgeschirr up on the top of Les Eparges, behind and close to the monument. My first battlefield find.

It has many battle scars: shrapnel and possibly also bullets have pierced it in many places, and its five and a half decade underground hasn't really improved it. By now it's already 45 years above ground - coming close to being as long in sight as it has been hidden from human eyes.

These things have sad stories to tell for those who have ears to hear, and terrible sights to see for those whose eyes look further than today's tangible world.
