How to display

Hey guys,

i recently read a nice article on kaisersbunker about how to display a pickelhaube and was wondering how you do it.

I bought some cheap candle holder and going to cover them with some musselin material.

Greetings

I bought some cheap storrage Glasses (my are form Dimono Size M - 9cm diameter and 15cm tall) and dressed it up with a Kaiser-Mustache :D

I myself do not use them , but some guys use cheap wine or champagne glasses.

They look elegant and hold the helmet up off of their visors.

The same as the candle stick.

I have several helms that are misshapen .

I use 3/4 ply wood cut to the shape of the correct crown of the helmet .

I wrap the circumference with cloth to protect the liner.

I then have a wooden dowel stuck in the center of the plywood after I have drilled a hole.

This holds up the dome and I use 3 screws on the bottom of the plywood to hold the visors up off of the shelf.

In some cases I use a threaded rod and nuts to apply pressure to get that dome up .

In really bad cases of shrunken domes , I engineer rods that go into the back of the 91 posts or in an Off helmet I will take out the split rossetts then push the rods into the left over holes .

All on top of the 3/4 plywood.

This rig trues up the shape and if made to do so will eventually ( with time )pop up those shrunken domes .

Kind of got off of the subject didn't I ?

I use the Schnurr method....spray painted coffee cans with the plastic lids on both ends of the can. This gives good support and is a very cheap solution. You do have to drink the coffee however. :)

I use wine-glasses, they are cheap, and you can buy them in different sizes. For additional length or stability I use Belgian beer glasses.

Glass isn't agressive to leather, and it keep's the front and rear visors free from the dreaded stitching getting loose problems.
:thumb up:

I'm fortunate to have a ceramic kiln at my disposal and a mold from which I can turn out ceramic supports (like half of a styro-head, only non-damaging to the leather). I place these on old glass tumblers or dowels mounted on wood bases measured to keep the visors just a couple of millimeters above the shelf. The glazed ceramic keeps the helmet and liner in shape and also supports the helmet. IF I have a helmet I don't want resting on the liner, I omit the ceramic form and use the glass or dowel with a pad on top. To me, as long as the helmet isn't resting on the visors, it's all good.
Unfortunately, I lose my kiln privileges in June, when I retire. (don't worry, I'm not broken up about it. :P )

I use cheap IKEA glasses for displaying helmets.

Does anybody use the Helmet-Stands out of acrylic for collectors? I was thinking about them but then I‘ve read the article on Kaisersbunker to use a coffee-can and desided to use a Glass with a similar shape. But I‘d like to know your opinion if these stand would support the Helmet in a better way.

Thanks for your answers gentlemen :)

Sandy I always place a smooth plastic food storage container over the coffee can as it distributes the weight. If not, in a few short years there would be a ring impressed into the leather shell which would be a disaster. Those X shape things you linked to would do even more damage. A giant X impressed into every shell interior.....

For the time beeing i have a fairly primitive way of displaying my helmets
I use cut to size 2 liter plastic water bottles
It fits right onto the suportdisc from the spike so they cant deform in any way

Thank you for this Tipp Tony. I will check my Kitchen tomorrow, I don‘t want to risk anythink. Think my storrage Glass has a rounded edge on the ground but maybe I will find a round container or bowl which fits the shape of the Helmet in a much better way to support it. Otherwise I will buy one...
