dear Pickelhaube community,
I visited Ypres today again , but alas, alle musea were closed, but could of course visit a lot of graveyards and monuments

Being in the flanders fields museum shop at the tourist info I saw again the files on first world war headgear published by the museum in small booklets that can be filed in a nice folder.

explanations in four languages.

These exist for german british belgian en French headgear.

For experienced collectors info is maybe superficial, but these booklets are nonetheless very nicely illustrated and give a quite complete overview of the types of headgear used in those countries, so back at home, made some photo's to show these nice booklets to you in the reference book section

I am planning a trip to Ypres myself in a week or 2, haven't been there since 2014, because of the hype of the 100year celebrations of WW1, and the flood of too many visitors/tourists then. Been there many times before, but I like to walk the salient alone, not being confronted by many other folks. If the shop there in the Flanders fields museum still has them, I'll buy them.

I know, I already visited that museum many times before, now a young couple are in charge there. Excellent display's! The first time I visited it was in 1991, years ago, the last time was in 2012. But I sure will go there again.

I can understand that John. For me it is a 2hours drive in my car to get to Ypres, the Somme will take longer, just like Verdun.

hooge krater, flanders fields, and the passchendaele museum were closed last weekend for the winter closure, flanders fields reopens next week, hooge krater in february, paschendael forgot details
so check before departure, ...

I do consider myself very fortunate to live close to the battlefields, and I visit them very often

Yes I sure know that pub/restaurant. And I know Johan too, first time we met was 13 meters below Flanders field, in the Vampire dugout which was open to people who had his book, Beneath Flanders Fields. This was organised by the now defunct website Forumeerstewereldoorlog.NL.
When people arrived there on the site of the dugout, the book got a stamp,"vampire dugout project, zonnebeke 22 maart 2008"in it.
After visiting the dugout, I later went to his Pub and bought a nice DVD, also signed by him and Peter Barton, with whom I also spoke while at the dugout. Both very nice guy's. Johan was also great in giving lost soldiers a grave, the Zonnebeke 5. Which resulted also in the 2 brothers memorial, next to his pub.

Correct Coert. Vampire Dugout- Went there; done that!
-in Oktober 2007 we were at the Zonnebeke Five ceremony.
-we live at about 35 km-22 miles from Ieper-Ypres.

In those day's I visited the Canada fairs also, bought nice items there too. A shame those fairs aren't there anymore though..

As usual only a daytrip, I have 4 cats at home, I can't let them go without food for longer than that, the servant, me, must be present in the evening.

In the Canadian Army we have a saying that officers have drilled into them during training. "The troops come first." I.e. when on exercise or operations the soldiers always eat first when it is fresh rations, the logic being if you run out of food they are taken care of and the officers can go without a meal.

My wife understands that saying now as our cat (or cats when we had more than one) is the "troops" in our house.
