The M16 steel trench shield ,
A rotating loophole cover could be operated from the inside, with a weld-rivet on the outside of the shield to hold it in the open position
This shield took two bullet hits, the bullet that hit next to opening disabled the rotating cover, it can no longer be completely opened because of the out pushing dent. The other bullet took a piece out on the top, probably making it a deadly piece of flying metal.

What is strange about this plate is that the bullets hit on the inside… :-k
