I must say I haven't seen something like this before. It almost looks like someone put electrical tape over a crack or something.

I have a friend who has wanted one of these for years and he's skeptical about the repair and honestly I don't think its period done but I figured I'd consult the experts. It Definitely doesn't look like something that was done by a soldier of the period
