I got suckered by one of these about 20 years ago. $1500 worth of suckered.

It is a post-war helmet. Key give away are those perforations. Chances are the chinscales rosettes are threaded like mine were.

Tony, should one assume that ALL helmets showing these perforations in the sweatband forehead area are post-war?

Hi Bruno,
Probably not, as just when I think something is a general rule, I am proven wrong. But these helmets with that coffee-cream liner and front perforations are the same as the one I got suckered on. Absolutely post-1918. New collector, no internet forums to ask questions..

I agree with Tony. After WWI, there must've been veterans who wanted to purchase helmets still. If it's an old WWI era shell, it was probably re-lined. If you're aware that these are Weimarian, or re-lined after the war, then I think they still have a place in the collection, but I wouldn't bid full price on them.
Tony, don't feel bad, you should see some of the junk I bought. Same as you, no experience, no forums, just bought helmets (when an M15 could still be gotten for $40 or less)! Fortunately, they make good forms for my helmet / maneuver covers.

Yes, very much like some of the 1920's-30's pickelhauben I own. The ones made for wear by veterans in Germany as opposed to being made for export to South America are quite rare and often of superior construction to earlier helmets, and I snap them up when I can find them. Not this one, though- too expensive, and I'm suspicious it may have been dicked with. As a footnote, there were wartime officer's helmets with perforation holes in the forehead area of the sweatband...

As Tony said the Junkers catalog is full of them. I just provided a folder with the catalog in it. So then the question is of these 1920s and 30s veterans helmets–what kind of thread is used on the bolts? Is this why we see machined threads on helmets that look otherwise perfect?? :dontknow: :dontknow:

What about this one?(scroll down)

It has those naughty perforations but it looks pretty good to me? There's even a picture of the actual bloke wearing the bastard! :D

Hey Joe,

Nice reprint of the catalog. I'd like to find one sometime, but doubt it will happen.

I wish I could've gone to Berlin back then and gone shopping at that store!
