This does not appear to be the same helmet that we saw at the SOS in Feb. Any thoughts ???? Bill http://cgi.ebay.de/original-Offizier-Pickelhaube-Sachsen-Gotha-gewoelbt_W0QQitemZ220039254475QQihZ012QQcategoryZ34649QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Hi Bruno,
The helmet that I saw at the SOS was a wonderful example of an Officer's helmet from IR94. The helmet seemed right in every way until you removed the plate and looked on the back. Immediately you could see that it was a galvano copy. It turned up next in the Kube auction (Spring 06). When I asked to see a picture of the back side of the plate I received a note saying that the helmet was fake and would be withdrawn. The helmet on E-Bay appears to be different than the one that we saw at the SOS. Since my post I asked the seller to send additional pictures. The helmet plate has the proper Fuerst motto and is not a copy but it has three additional holes on the eagles breast with the star soldered on to the eagle. In my opinion we have an origional Fuerst helmet plate mated to a questionable Saxon wappen. BIll

And, a Preußen Landeskokarde rather than a Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach one.

Chas.

Thank you very much Bill and Chas.
Do you know there was an exceptional helmet auction in Paris two weeks ago? From what I heard the collection was gathered between the two world wars and the owner died in 1958... the helmets were then kept in storage. I could not be there and I have seen none but from what I heard from knowledgeable friends the collection was really exceptional. So have been prices. Two beautiful officer Tschapkas (UR13 and UR14) sold for about 7.000 euro each. An IR73 EM helmet for 3200 euro. A Garde Reiter EM helmet for around 20.000 euro... I forgot: you must add 20% tax to all prices...
There were helmets from all small states, both models of the IR92 (jumping horse and skull and bones), cuirassiers, uhlans... I have just seen scans of some pages of the catalog and I was impressed. I will try to get the full list of prices.
My best, Bruno
Bruno
