Can't figure out why it is bid so high...

This is not a square dip, it looks like the liner is original and that would make it a 1917, I suspect that the winning bidder put a high enough price on the helmet because he wanted it and did not expect to be bid aggressively against as he bid a day earlier than the under bidder, and the under bidder could not accept loosing until the price got high enough that he gave up.
