Issued Saxon Model 92 Cavalry Saber

This is an issued example of the Saxon Model 92 Cavalry saber. Similar to the Prussian KD89 but with a curved blade. This one was originally marked to the 18th Uhlan Regiment. A later unit stamp reads E J (or I) IV 20. I'm guessing a Corps level unit. This one is pretty beat up but these are hard to find and I am happy to have it.

If these came out in 92, why is the one shown above marked 85? I just picked one up and it's marked 89. So how can the sword be issued before it came out? What am I missing here?

In 1884 the Saxon 1867 Cavalry saber (similar to Prussian M52) was given a quillback blade that I think was the same type blade that the KD92 used. I think that they re-used these quillback model 67 blades when they first started making the Model 92s.

Ahhhh, that makes a lot of sense. That would probably explain the 2 inspections marks on the spine of the blade, just like the one shown here but on mine it's a crown over s instead of crown over R. I'll work on some pics. The regiment marking on scabbard is R.H.3.68, any ideas of what that is? How did I do for $163?

$163 was a steal! The unit mark is for one of the Saxon Hussar Regiments. The 3.68 is usually the squadron and weapon number. The Regiment number usually is before the unit type (RH in this case, Reseve Hussar)

It looks like Roman numeral II. So maybe the 2nd Saxon Hussar Regt, which would be number 19 in the German Army.

I would like to thank you for your time and wisdom. All my questions about my newest piece you have answered. Although I also won an early U.S.M.C. marked Mk 2 fighting knife with original leather scabbard, and a set of Luftwaffe mess hall flatware at the same auction. Thanks again. I think I'm going to really like this site.

Thank you cptbob, you have answered a question that has been in the back of my mind for a while. I have dress versions of Prussia, Wurtemburg and Saxony and have been wondering why the Saxon has a curved blade and the other two are straight. I now need to adjust my documentation to reflect a model 92 instead of 89.

Thanks again, Lance

Every time I find a KS92 trooper for sale they're always missing the scabbard. Not an easy one to find. Thanks for sharing!
I wonder if the Argentine scabbard fits? I know the WW1 export ersatz saber has a thinner blade so no luck there.
