I've seen similar pics before and I agree it seems such a waste now but that's offcourse with hindsight.

It was not a waste, it was required by the Treaty of Versailles for Germany to disarm, If millions of these helmets had not been destroyed, they would have the value of scrap now
 
Well you taught me something there Gustaf.....I knew that such things as fighter planes and war ships had to be destroyed as a result of the Treaty but helmets???? Some poor Fritz with a pick and thousands of stahlhelme??? Hmmmm....another example of German efficiency...one pick strike one perfect hole und Kaput! Glad he did not get near my 2 stahlhelmes.
