Jäger zu Pferde field cap

Hi all,

I just bought a pre war Jäger zu Pferde field cap and I would like to know your opinion regarding it.
I'm little bit concern about the sewing. On the green band there is visible a sewing (light green) which kept the yellow piping. To be honest I never saw anything like this before, also on the rear side the green band was sewn in a strange way.

The cap is very nicely stamped what you can see, but I'm not sure about that sewing.

The lining looks fine to me.

What do you think about it? Has anyone seen this kind of sewing?

The stampings look odd to me. There seems to be some problem with the date too. The J.z.P. enlisted field cap had changed from white to gray/green in 1903! The first three regiments were formed in 1905. So I am wondering why there is no specific unit number designated. I don't see any reason for a double date stamp for the same year (at least it looks like both dates are 1908). None of the regiments were garrisoned in the Garde Korps. There was a Garde Jäger zu Pferde Squadron until 1905, but it was attached to the J.z.P. Regiment Nr.2 in the XI.A.K. It just doesn't add up.

Sewing of the cockades looks wrong as well.
From what I've learned, they used similar thread colors as the paint (e.g. red on red for the Reichs cockade) and the holes were aligned vertically for the stitching to coincide with the cap seams.

I disagree with you Ron. Sometimes the holes were aligned horizontally and the thread colors were different as the color of cockades.
Just have a look on some of the Tony's field cap.

This is actually an interesting topic...
Many caps were field-repaired or re-stitched post-war or maybe not all manufacturers adhered to the same technique. Maybe not all aligned the holes but I'm pretty sure they tried to match colors, at least at production level (I recon this didn't apply to field repairs where they had to use whatever thread was available).
For instance, look at the small red piece of cloth placed under the Reichs cockade to provide a red background in case the threads wouldn't cover the holes entirely. You can see this on some of Tony's caps as well as on mine (see closeup below). If manufacturers went this far to make sure they had similar tones (e.g. red over red), why wouldn't they also make sure to use same-color threads?

Hello.

Sorry but there is nothing I like on this cap... Stitchings looks not good, stamps looks not good (they are all made with the same ink, there is no Rgt number...) as the cockades with a very yellow white...
