I just don't understand how the vents
in the spike tube are turned to the front ?

That's how it was given to me, but I can see how you can unscrew the bottom plate attached to the vent and turn it.

I added pics of the inside. Leather has deteriorated. Looks like a number (possibly 99) stamped on the inside.
