Hello Collectors!

I posted before, but not in this section of the forum. I am Andi from Germany. I collect for 15 years now everything connected with the 12th battle of the Isonzo.
One main Unit of this battle in Oktober 1917 was the German Jägerdivision, set up right before the battle behind the front. Together with the Alpenkorps and the württembergischen Gebirgs-Bataillon those units were the Mountain Troops of this Battle at the Italian Front.

I like to collect the headgear and so all the years one of my main tasks was to get Jäger Headgear. I was quiet lucky over the years and so i would like to show you my pieces.

One cap just arrived this month and comes fresh from an old barn. One young couple bought an old farm in Bavaria close to Rosenheim which is in the very south of Bavaria. By cleaning the barn they found that cap and it found its way to me. You can see the condition of the pieces that are found nowdays. However i cant complain on that one. Bavarian Jäger Caps are very rare and you have to be happy with any that you can get.

Its made from a very low quality wool, so that one wasnt a rich officer. Note the fieldgrey cloth that was used, as bavaria didnt adopt the fieldgreen for Jägers. From the beginning on they used fieldgrey cloth instead of fieldgreen. Also the green appears a little brighter than on prussian models.
As there was fieldgrey cloth used we can say for sure that this cap belonged to an officer of 1st bavarian Jäger Bataillon, 2nd bavarian Jäger Bataillon or 2nd bavarian Reserve Jäger Bataillon. Possible will be also the bavarian Bataillon of Jäger Regiment Nr. 3.

Best wishes!

Andi

Here we have a nice early war prussian example. As you can see the cloth part is fieldgreen cloth compared to a darker green colorband. It is quiet a dark green but it apears that Jäger-Bataillon Nr. 10 used a little darker green. I saw a Waffenrock of Jäger Bataillon Nr. 10 here in the forum using the same dark green. The Producers Mark from Goslar inside the cap connects it with the Jäger Bataillon Nr. 10, as they were stationed in Goslar before the war. The bataillon was part of the Alpenkorps and fought on nearly every battlefield of the war.
It looks like been private purchased by an Unteroffizier that was later promoted to Leutnant. However i can not be sure about the officer state kokarde, but it looks like its been there for a long time. The cap has a name inside that reads Loof. I wasnt able to find something about him. Maybe you can help?
I made a photo with a fieldgrey strap on it to show the difference in color. When the army changed to the M1915 standart Issued uniforms they went on by using anthoer more greener wool for Jägers but way more darker than before the war.

That's a nice hat.
Thanks for the post and the photos

Here we have one of my holy grails. A Depot issued Fieldcap for enlisted jägers in fieldgreen. It has a Depot Issue Stamp from the 5th Armee Korps. That Korps only set up two Jäger units. Jäger Bataillon Nr. 5 and Reserve Jäger Bataillon Nr. 5. The Reserve Jäger Bataillon Nr. 5 saw action in the 12th battle of the Isonzo so it fits perfect into my collection. Only some nice straps to compare are missing :-)
The rest of the cap talks for itself!

And the last one in the row. Not a true Jäger Cap but it pretends to be :-)
Here we have a Universal Fieldcap issued by the XIII. Armeekorps. It could have been worn by any unit of that AK but for my collection that fieldcap shows a cap worn by an enlisted soldier of württembergisches Gebirgs-Bataillon. It was the unit that first reached Mt. Matajur during the 12. Battle of the Isonzo. Young Oberleutnant Rommel served in this unit during the battle. Normally that unit wasnt allowed to wear the edelweiss badge but many period photos showing that they wore it anyway.

It wasnt so dirty at all. A little use of the vacuum cleaner was all that had to be done. It was in a crushed shape and i had to give it its shape back, but that wasnt a problem. One week in the fridge killed all the animals at least so now it has his final home in my closet.

My collector friend Mike Kelso ( who is a member here ) is also a Jager collector. He has a lot of Jager straps
but I am not sure if he has any duplicates for sale or trade ? Maybe he will post some photos here.

Yes very nice. I didn't realize that the German Mountain Troops used the Edelweiss in WWI until I was at the museum in Ingolstadt and saw one on a pickelhaube. They had an amazing WWI display on when I visited.
Interesting helmet
I have never seen one like it
