"Kandidaten des eisernen Kreuzes"

This one gave me many pauses. In addition to the belt buckle they had this horrible thing of holding up a sign to tell me exactly who they were. However, if I am correct they have juxtaposed 2 of the words. Should it not be ersatz battalion L JR 65?

Thanks Joe. That's how I wrote it up under the original on Flickr. I think there would be a mutiny if 5. Rheinisches Infanterie-Regiment Nr.65 - or even RJR 65 were outfitted with those belts #-o

I had posted this one years ago pre-crash. Same date, same unit, same location, in Coblenz. 2nd Ko., Ersatz Btn. of Landwehr Infantrie Regt. 65, Coblenz. Cancelled 11 Nov. 14. On both, there are 3 Drill Instructors and 68 shoulderboards too.
