Kavalleriemuseum Vornholz

Anyone have any info on this Museum they cold share with me? Hours? Admission fee? Etc. It is not to far from me and I was thinking of going up there this weekend to check it out. Look amazing!

If you go could you check it out and see if you can get a photo of this specific breastplate. Never seen one in real life. I hope you are quite successful in this!

I have a appointment this Sunday to visit. I will look out for that breastplate but I will be paying a lot of attention to the skulls!
 
Speaking of skulls I was trying to send some scans to Bruno about this and I used the book by John Pierre that came out last year. It is amazing! There were probably 7 pages with detailed pictures just on the 1LGHR! If you do not have this book I would highly recommend it. The bad news it is all in French. The title is long-Les hussards allemands et leurs colbacks 1808-1918 anyone with an interest in these kinds of hats gets 1 million pictures of examples showing anomalies and differences. I thought it was very well done but I don't speak French. I translate poorly.

Man, am I ever glad I 'googled' Kuerssier, because this page came up! In a few weeks, we'll be spending two weeks in Guetersloh, about 20K from this museum! Guess where I'm going?

This museum was a wonderful experience! Herr Zinger showed us around, allowing me to photograph all I wanted. It was a very personal tour, showing us the family items and giving insight into the other items... I even got to hold a hussar's lance. There is a Kuerassier tunic from Crown Prince Wilhelm and other personal items from both famous and not so famous riders. The most amazing thing was that almost every regiment was presented with its uniform and headgear... Plus other items.
They hope to combine the 'field gray' collection with the rest sometime in the future. I was also asked
Not to publish any photos in books because the collection had been used previously without permission... I assured them that none of the photos I took would end up in a book. I also offered to help if they did relocate the collection to another part of the Schloss. Maybe make a catalog at that tme? :) Really though I doubt I will be helping.... Although I would certainly be willing.
By the way, Herr Zinger was a guide, not the owner. The cost was €2.00 each and well worth the cost and tip. It isn't easy to set up an appointment, but it is worth the effort.

Is there any chance that the photos could be restored here?

I was telling a forum member at the recent O.V.M.S. "Cornfield" Show about this museum. Unfortunately I could not remember the name Castle "Haus Vornholz", near Münster in Westfalen, Germany.

Does anyone here know if this museum still exists? I realize it was only open by appointment back in 2011 when this thread was originally posted here.

I have old photos maybe from the 1980's taken by collector friends
Photos back then are not close in quality compared to today's photos
IF I can find them , I will scan and post .
I have not personally been there
I think the kettle drum covers for H R 3 are there

It appears they will only allow a group to visit by appointment. They make it clear on their website they want privacy.

Just don't show up with a camera knocking on the door unannounced, it's a private home and I'm sure they wouldn't like it any more than any of us would.

If planning on being in the area I would just give them a call or send an email in advance sharing your interest and showing your intentions and maybe even say you would like to make a donation to help with the care of the calvary collection. I would think they would be very happy to show you around.

They dont give you a phone number or e-mail adress and they sure dont need a donation.
ITS only possible to contact the tourism office.

Then I would try contacting the tourist office, it sure couldn't hurt.

I've always found the people who work there very eager to be helpful and also very proud of their local history. Come to think of it I've never seen anyone who was offended by a tourist/visitor offering to make a donation.

In fact, I make it a point to give every tour guide 5 or 10 euros at the end of a guided tour. I usually say it's a little beer money when handing it to them and we usually share a laugh. Several times they have really told me how much they appreciate it. Many of these workers are volunteers and not paid and really happy for a free drink or some pocket money.

One time at the Neues Palais during a tour the guide held me and my wife back and was so happy for the tip/donation they showed us FdG's private tolite because he thought it was something unique, interesting and not open to the public . :LOL:
