Kokarden

Lost Skeleton

I purchased these recently on eBay and would like to solicit opinions. The rings are ferromagnetic.

Look fine to me Chas. I especially like the "orangey red" colour of the Reichs kokarde as so many of the originals have this hue to them. Brian

Hi Brian:

I don't question the Kokarden being original, but I would like to know what their intended purpose was. The rings are identical to those for the Unteroffizier mit Portepee Kokarde. However, rather than being silver or gilt plated, they have been rustproofed in a metal phosphate solution (parkerized).

Were they "camouflaged" for use with M15 issued helmets? Why bother? Has anyone encountered these before?

Thanks,

Chas

I've got 3 examples of these. The pair on my NCO private purchase 74th Regiment (Waterloo Wappen) are similar, but originally with silver-plated stamped brass rings with exactly the same diagonal hatching.

The other example - a single e-bay purchase - is parkerised.

I have read several articles on these and conclude that this form of decoration would be the only way to distinguish an NCO's helmet from an OR's.

Worthy of further discussion and research. One of the best sources I use is original photographs. But one has to consider that the vast majority are non-detail or out of focus (and of course, black & white !!!). Occaisionally a "gem" turns up that can assist with identification of many aspects of uniform, especially if named, etc.

Martin.
