KP 505

What an amazing picture series! Great find

What does K.P. stand for, perhaps something like "Kraftfahrzeug-Park"? Kraftfahr-Abt. 505 was stationed in Jerusalem so I suppose that unit is meant.

OK I should have googled before posting, it is "Kraftwagen-Park". Evidently the alternative term "Kraftfahr-Abt." existed for the same unit, or is there any meaning to the difference?

I lingered on there for ages. This is simply marvellous! I've sent you a Dropbox invitation Joe to download the Spring Edition of 'Over the Front', which I know you'll enjoy.

Thanks for posting those in good quality Joe.

Can anyone make an educated guess as to what colour those musicians swallows nests would have been?

Cheers

... on closer inspection of that photo of the musicians, there's something curious going on. This is how I would expect the 1916 tunic of an NCO in Palestine should look...

That ones from the Bavarian army museum, and is described in detail in "The German Army in the First World War" J Kraus (Verlag Militaria 2004). Note plain shoulder straps, no breast pockets, rank insingia on the collar.

Now have a look at one of your guys-

Nice EK and Turkish War Medal but see the rank insignia as chevrons on the upper left arm. That's unusual for Palestine, but always done by the Schutztruppe on khaki uniforms. He's also got breast pockets like the Schutztruppe. I didn't think that was too odd at first. "Die feldgraue Uniformierung des deutschen Heeres 1907-1918" by J Kraus and W Hanne (Verlag Militaria 2009) describes a 1917 tunic for other ranks in Palestine that did have breast pockets.

But then look at this chap-

Again nice EK, but the shoulder straps don't look plain khaki but more like flecked or striped. A bit like the Schutztruppe-

OMBR%2004thumb.jpg

Note the similarity in pockets. Could it be that the 1917 khaki tunic described was in fact surplus 1896 Schutztruppe uniforms being re-issued? We know their helmets are re-issued East Asian ones.

To confuse things further, see this guy-

He's again got the flecked shoulder strap, but has his rank insignia
as button on the collar... I won't get any sleep tonight at this rate!

I understand that the government had wanted to resupply the schutztruppe via Zeppelin. The plan fell through due to logistics etc. Could these uniforms be part of that cache?

Possibly...

Do you have a date on this photo Joe?

The aborted Zepp mission was in Nov 1917.

No date of this photo however it is part of the photo collection from KP 505. They all seem to be 1918. Relatively early in the year. Some of the collection is dated–here is the entire set. Your analysis is fascinating to us colonial amateurs and when you get done please take a look at the Southwest Africa officer with the blue matting.

Actualy, the Zeppelin made it most way to its destination, but was ordered back doe to the defeat of the troops they were going to supply, it is a rather interesting story.

From one complete amateur to another!

And from one amateur back....

Nice pic, fairly standard officer's 1897 grey home uniform with blue piping, collar and cuffs for DSWA. Large officers Litzen on collar, Leutnant from the shoulder strap. Parade aguilettes on the left breast and a medal, possibly 1897 Wilhelm I Centenary? Suedwester hat, again in grey with blue edging, imperial cockade... very good photo. Does he have a name?

No name no date no nothing–just the picture and the matting. Thank you for your help. Unfortunately, my Chinese connection inside of China seems to have been heavily restricted by the firewall. Hopefully we will get more translations!
