Hi could you give advice on this lobster tail, I believe the spike and the cockades are not the right type? I think the chin strap is repro.

Would it be worth polishing/removing the surface rust? If so what’s best to use?

Don't forget this helmet also came with the smaller cockades, according to Kaiser's bunker. Nothing wrong with your cockades.
Use autosol or comparable polish on the rust with a grey scotchbrite and finish with OOOO steel wool. Autosol is safe to use on parkerized and plated surfaces (never use the scotch Brite on plated surfaces unless it's already scratched, however yours is definitely not plated) The helmet steel has a high nickel content so they will buff out beautifully.
Unfortunately if you look closely at all the examples above they're still very scratched from sanding and never finished, which is a shame it doesn't take much more effort to remove the scratches. No offense to anyone's helmet.
