Landwehr

As suggested, a more thematic group of photos dealing with the Prussian Landwehr. Perhaps Dave M. can comment on photo #3. I am a little confused. Are these 3 senior NCO's and thus the swords? Why are the uniforms of the 2 Landwehr men different? This just adds further to the confusion about this group, at least in my mind. Brian

Brian, It would be nice is your photos were larger. They are so small, it is hard to make out details which is a shame. All three of these fellows carry swords as they are Unteroffizier mit Portepee (NCOs with the Officer's sword knot). The chap in the center is probably with a Jäger Btln but he could be Telegraphen or Flieger. The Landsturm and Landwehr both wore Tschako during the war, although in theory the Landwehr was wearing Pickelhaube after 1881 when they once again adopted the Pickelhaube. The fellow on the left is wearing the M10 Feldrock, but with the additional double lace on the cuffs of the Feldwebel. He must be Landwehr (?) as he does not have the numbers on the collar which was worn by Landsturm. The Landsturm and Landwehr both wore several patterns of Litewka with colored collar patches, which is what your fellow on the right is wearing. These can be see with, or without pockets.

Tony:

I believe the feldwebel on the left is wearing the pre-war waffenrock with the standing collar. The middle NCO is wearing the M-1910 feldgrau (graugrun??) waffenrock and the NCO on the right is wearing the 1905 pattern enlisted litewka. The question I have is what unit(s) wore a standard prussian tschako and BRANDENBURG cuffs! Both the prewar and the M-10 waffenrocks shown above have them?

Whoa! Missed that! The short answer, is no-one wore a standard Preußen Tschako with Brandenburg cuffs. So WHAT is this guy doing wearing that combo?? You are correct, chap left is wearing a Dunkelblau. Missed that one too........

Any dates and or cancellations on your pc's?

Mike

Same with your Landsturm pic, is there any dates or cancellations, snd what are the collar device numbers?

Mike:
The 3rd photo of the three shako wearing individuals is marked:
Soldatenbrief, Landsturm Bataillon Gelsenkir...??? It is also stamped SENNELAGER 12.9.14. Unfortunately, the Sennelager stamping obliterates the Gelsenkir.... The inscription on the face of the photo reads:Dielesten Stunden vor dem Ausmarsch in Feindesland 1914. The middle individual with the regular Prussian shako has the extra NCO buttons on his collar. His belt is also unusual in that it is thinner than regulation and has a roller style buckle more like one would find on a rifle sling. It is definately, not regular infantry or the cavalry style. In fact, I have never seen anyone wearing a belt of this sort in period photos. No markings on photo number one or any of the rest. Brian

Thanks R1 as usual, you are way ahead of me...Im still editing the post and you are already providing an answer ha! ha! I think that you are probably correct on the word . Brian
