Large Bavarian presentation photo album

I have to say as much as I like spiked helmets, this photo album I picked up at SOS is one of my favorite finds of all time. Bought a helmet from a guy before the show, and he told me about this album he had, he held it under the table at the show until I got there and I snapped it up.

it is a very large leather covered album, even the pages are around 1/4 inch thick!

I believe it is presented by the officers of this unit to their commanding officer or vice versa? Anyone that can help with full translation is appreciated.

Has 48 Officer CDV's or pictures inside!

thanks

James

Hi James,
Very nice find :)
Translates roughly as:

"The officers, doctors and Beamten (no idea how to translate that)
of the
royal 16th Infantry Regiment
Grossherzog Ferdinand
von Toskana
for their
departing commander"

Regards,
Lars

James, this is a wonderful and personal piece of history. A great find that I couldn't have ignored either (y)🤩
Beamter is mostly translated as „official“ or „civil servant“

James,

a wonderful album and in superb condition. I can’t see any names so I am assuming these gentleman are all un-named? Given that I can immediately identify two of the field officers on the first page I would determine that this collection dates around December 1900.

The bespectacled Major with the Johanniter order at the throat is Kamill Mantey Freiherr von Dittmer commanding the III. battalion. The bearded Oberstleutnant at top right is Emil Gradinger, the 2nd in command. The departing commander was Oberst Otto Walter von Walderstötten. I would take a guess at the chap between those two as Major Maximilian Zottmann, commanding I. Bataillon.

Regards
Glenn

Glen you are amazing, thanks! I cannot easily take the pictures out to see if they are named etc. without risking damaging the album...

Morning James,

I certainly would not suggest that. Here is a picture of the guy who was the recipient of this magnificent album, Otto Walther von Walderstötten (1848-1934) pictured as a Generalmajor.

Walther von Walderstötten Otto_2.JPG

The officers and officials on the last two sheets are the medical officers on the bottom row of the second to last page and the top row of the last sheet with the Zahlmeisters on the bottom row of the last sheet. Some of the medical officers changed over the period 1900 and 1901 between the publications of the Bavarian army lists of those years but the Zahlmeisters did not.

Glenn

A wonderful photograph album. I love these things and have 30-40 albums myself. The identified presentation ones are few and far between.

Congratulations on your SOS purchase.
