Heres my latest,
I beleive it to be a private purchace wartime officers example, its the first I have seen like it, its rough but was a local find so price was realistic.
What parts would have been guilded?? everything??
any chance the big rivits holding visor trim are original or are they later additions?
Front visor trim and rear spine appear to be zinc and the ballance is steel or brass.

I believe your helmet is pre 1900 and enlisted?
Is it unit marked?
More picture are need for those more knowledgeable than me.
:D :D

Hi Jerry, no markings other than size marking on paper label .
I will try and get some more pics later.

Andrew

hi Andrew, and welcome! Those rivets are not original. We would need more pictures, especially of the inside. It does appear to have been private purchase, but then there are all sorts of different applications that I see. Addictive little hobby isn't it! Just when you thought you knew something you find something else! Welcome again.

Hey Andrew, Those rivets look more like they are buttons that have been afixed to the helmet.

Hi Guys, I just added some pics to image shack, not the best as I just came home from workand is dark so all done with a flash. Hard to get decent interior shots without damaging the liner so I hope what you can see is enough???
No extra holes under helmet plate so its good in that respect.
Now I chased up a bit more info from the guy I brought this from, he picked the helmet up in a flea marked in Germany back in the 80s and thats all I can tell you
Thanks for your interest to date and your warm welcomes.
Andrew

Heres the link to the extra pics

sorry guys I cand get the pictures bigger...if they are no good let me know and I will try again...never done the image shack thing before!

Nice find...a mid war helmet due to the grey zinc fittings we see. Needs some new small side buttons for that visor trim. Of note too I see the old bolt system (pre 1891) being used to hold the chin scales on. This jives with the German history of the helmet, somebody had some old parts to put on this to make it presentable. Zinc spike neck and base with brass pearlring. Spike cone look to be brass. Typical mid war combination of brass and zinc bits which would have had a light wash on them to make them look like brass. This has always been an officer helmet..look at the liner and the spike support disc on the inside with a little bit taken out of the edge for the screw from the rear spine. I can not see whether the crown on the eagle wappen is pierced. Anyway, a great find and congrats. Brian

Hi Brian, thanks for the input. The crown is peirced, the helmet plate appears to be pressed steel thats gilt washed,as is the bottom portion of spike where the brass pearling is fitted, the top cone of the spike is indeed brass.
Im tempted to see if I can have these parts re gilded but then again its quite cool as is.
Would like to replace/repair the chin scales and fit correct attatchment fixtures plus cockades. It wasnt a great outlay to purchace this, around the price of an average condition M1915 Prussian helmet.

Best Regards
Andrew

Andrew,

I have several examples where there is zinc and steel parts! Look at this example. http://www.pickelhauben.net/pickelhaube/Prussian%20ReserveFR.htm

I do not know how you would re-gild this. Brian would know if it is possible, but I always liked the zinc.

Thanks Joe, the more I look at it the more I like the weathered originality,I will try and repair/replace the chin scales and big buttons on visor trim then find some cockades and that will be that.
Are the old side posts any use to someone? and any sugestions as to where I may source replacements??

Best Regards and happy pickelhaube collecting
Andrew
