This is an OR's helmet, but you have GOT to read the "expert" Verification/appraisal done by R. Johnston of Germania International saying this Private's helmet is a "classic officer's helmet", as clearly shown by the "officer pattern" chinscales. HA HA HA HA!! :laughing6: Absolutely HILARIOUS!!

And I laughed even harder when I saw the opening bid!! :laughing3:

The appraisal is priceless. I want to be a Resident Historian too. Apparently you don't have to know much to qualify. The appraisal also taught me that apparently I'm a Germanophile.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry. The guy is a dealer. He sells helmets:

Frustrating...

We are lucky though that, dixit the seller, the auction started at a "more than reasonable price"!!!...
Well we'd better laugh, Joe, but I still feel sorry for the people who start collecting nowadays and get exposed to that sort of junk. I hope they read the forum...

Rick,
The helmet is fine. Through no fault of the seller, he was given a completely inaccurate description from someone who claims to be "an expert" in Imperial German, (highly questionable). So it is not the seller that is at fault here, as people will generally believe what they are told to be accurate. What was humorous was the evaluator describing this as a ""classic officer's helmet" etc. It is absolutely not an officer's helmet, it is Mannschaften; it is not worth $2500, it is worth (give or take) about $1000 or so. The unit is also very vague, as this was worn by a few distinct units. here is a list, every unit that had a gilt Garde eagle wore this helmet. http://www.kaisersbunker.com/gtp/New/infantry1.htm The best part was the evaluator saying "as clearly shown by the "officer pattern" chinscales. As you will see by surfing this site, the chinscales are standard M91 pattern, NEVER worn by officer's with the exposed lug like this; only Mannschaften.

I suppose the moral of this is, for anyone selling or buying anything, don't always believe what any self-described "expert" will tell you. Turn over any rock and you will find someone who calls themselves an "expert". This forum has taught me, that you can learn something everyday in this hobby. No-one is an expert.

"Junk" was referring to the whole ad., including the ridiculous authenticity statement. I am a little surprised that Tony, exigent and expert as he is, finds this hat fine though: the shape is mediocre, the markings elusive if present, the cockade saxon and, worst of all by far, the liner is missing! I recently had a correct and complete, if not pristine, Eisenbahn Regiment EM helmet (about the same pattern as this one) sold for less than $ 1000.00.

I echo all of the comments above. The seller has been taken in entirely by this Germania idiot. I wonder if he paid a percentage price for that fancy piece of evaluator paper?? The excessive starting price also shows that our seller has no clue as to how to list items on Ebay. He certainly has dollar signs in his eyes as a result of the grandiose Germania evaluation. This case, is an excellent example of how new collectors or just guys with too much money in their pockets can get sucked in. If collectors do not know their helmets, or do not have reference books and access to this forum they can get taken to the cleaners!! B

the so called expert can effect this hobby and . as stated above newwer collector's. There was a good example of this type of stuff happening in Ontario for WW2 pattern military vehicles. Dr Bill gregg , thought every vehicle he saw was worth a fortune and notified the owner of it . This effected the collecting market , as Dr gregg was an expert in identifying this type , but not valueing.
Sorry to get off the hlmet , but it is kinda relative to the "expert evaluation" theory.
