Lets Call This Trench Art

Here is something I picked up years ago at a small militaria show. This guy walked in with 2 items in a plastic shopping bag. This plaque and a complete brass Prussian telegraphers, leather belt and buckle. I naturally bought both items. I am thinking that this JR 5 item is Bavarian as the Prussian JR 5 is a Grenadier or Garde grenadier Regt. I suspect that if this where the case, the markings would be different. Any guess as to the skull significance or further ID would be appreciated....flame thrower, trench mortar, MG ?? Obviously, a vet bring back from a member of the CEF. A very cool piece which will go with me when I head for the old folks home, Ha Ha!!

Estimated the size of the pictures I would say that this "sign" or emblem would have looked nice above the entrance of a dug-out. :)
Btw, Brian, what is the size approximately, 10 - 15 cm. high?

The piece measures: Length (at the longest points ie. the bones) 19.6cm (7,75inches)
Width 15.8cm (6.25 inches). I would agree Pierre probably something to hang over a dugout enterance. It is very well made, from pine I believe .

Thank you for your addition, Brian. It is a remarkable artefact.
As I come here to learn, I have another question; is the Totenkopf also to be found as an emblem of Bavarian units or was this Totenkopf emblem "reserved" for Prussian units like for instance the Leib-Husaren Regiment nr 1?

Wow Brian, that is a very wonderful item, lots of Mojo with that guy....Congratulations. That would be a keeper for me as well.

Thanks for the comments gentlemen, much appreciated. Does anyone know the where Bavarian JR5 was assigned in 1917?
