First up, a Model 1860 Preußen Jäger or Train Mannschaften (Other Ranks) issued Tschako. More pics here

Next, a rare Model 1867/1873 Sachsen (Saxon) Mannschaften (Other Ranks) Train Tschako. This example is marked to both Kgl. Sächs. 1. Train-Bataillon Nr.12 (Dresden/Bischofswerda) XII Armee Korps and Kgl. Sächs. 2. Train-Bataillon Nr.19 (Leipzig) XIX Armee Korps. More pics here

Still on the Tschakos, another rare one, a Model 1871 Württemberg Train Bataillon Mannschaften (Other Ranks) issued Tschako. This example is marked to Königs Train-Bataillon Nr.13 (Ludwigsburg) XIII Armee Korps. The Württembergisches Train-Bataillon was established in 1871 and wore the Preußen M1860 pattern Tschako until the Bataillon adopted the Pickelhaube in 1903. More pics here

Next, post post 1903 Haubes. This is a Model 1895 (adopted in 1903) by the same Württemberg Train Abteilung 13 Reserve Mannschaften (Other Ranks) Pickelhaube for Württemberg. Train - Abt. Nr. 13, Ludwigsburg XIII. Armee-Korps. Although the features of this Pickelhaube are as per a M1895, it is technically a M1903. Prior to 1903, Württemberg Train wore a black leather Tschako as above. And last, (for me) is a Model 1895 Baden Mannschaften (Other Ranks) Pickelhaube for Badische Train - Abt. Nr. 14., Durlach XIV. Armee-Korps. The Baden Train wore a Tschako from 1871 to 1903.

Great thread!

I only have one train helmet -- I have had two others but only this remains. This is a Guard Fähnrich- completely officer with the exception of the pearl ring. The spike itself is 13 cm high! Came from the collection of the late Tony Colson.

Very cool Tony and Joe. I had a Prussian OR's helmet with convex scales but I sold it a couple of years ago on Ebay. It is truly amazing with those shakos of yours Tony that they have survived all these years! Brian
 
L.S. T.B. 8 Is this a " Train" unit? I have the same marks in a 1901 dated helmet in the same condition as yours with T.B. 8 5E. I thought this was a suppy train or something such and not Train as in Railroad. Love your helmet! :D :D Jerry

Jerry,
Der Train was horse-drawn Supply and Service troops. The English word "Train" in German was the die Eisenbahn which were Railway Troops.

The Train units started out as battalions, so you see the earlier ones marked TB etc, and then they became Abteilung (Detachments) so these later ones are found with the marking TA etc.

Very nice helmets posted here.

I was wondering if anyone knew anything about a certain Train Abtl no.13 Ludwigsburg? A Wurttemberg regiment I believe.
 
I thought that I would resurrect this thread and add to it. This is a Prussian Train Officer's helmet that could have been used by an officer in Train Battalion 1 thru 9, 11, 15 thru 17, and 20 thru 21.

There is some damage to the leather shell, but all-in-all it's not in bad shape.

The Wappen is held on with bent pins, which I always believed was an indication of a later production helmet. This helmet is also extremely large. There are no size markings but I would guess this helmet to be a size 62. It is noticeably larger than any other leather Pickelhaube I own.

I have had this helmet so long that I can't remember where I got it. It remains a proud addition to my collection.

That is a nice bade tshako never seen one only pruisian and sachsen ones are more common to find

I have around 15 or so Tschako, and I collect to Baden, but a Baden Train Tschako has alluded me. VERY nice to see one. Congratulations John.

Ok - you asked for it. Non of my train helmets are that great, but I like them. The shako is marked for TB 16 and dated 1900, the two spikes are both TB8 and I've posted plenty about them before, The Wappen is for TB13.View attachment 1

 
ok the site really doesn't like me. Here is a photo of the stamps in the Shako (at some point the liner was replaced). I've owned this piece for over 50 years and this is the way I got it.
What does the LB1, LG, & 2 mean? The LB1 I thought could mean Leib Battalion first company, but that doesn't make sense for a single battalion unit.
