Here is my latest find, a King Ludwig II original pipe:
These have been copied and reproduced by the thousands, but there are telltale differences. The reproductions usually have either a "DBGM" mark, Deutsches Bundes-Gebrauchsmuster (German federal utility model) or they are marked "W GERMANY". Both marks would appear under the flip up lid on the metal ring. This pipe has no marks and no signs that any were ever ground off.
The flip up lid on reproductions is usually chromed; this one is nickel.
The picture of Ludwig II is slightly larger on the reproductions, his hair is partially covered by the lid and the picture wraps around the pipe bowl to a greater extent:
The stem has been cleaned and the cork has been replaced.
I do like pipes, not the large regimental types, but the small type that a soldier would carry or a Prince would give as a gift:
