M15 kugel

Gentlemen,
While looking over the kugel on my M15 today, I noticed that two of the five vent holes in the kugel are spaced a bit closer than the others which seems a bit unusual. Why would this be? Attached are two pictures. The finish wear on all parts is even and the kugel is detachable. I removed it with a bit effort and the base also has a bit of rust. There are no marking on the kugel. I would appreciate your thoughts.

Thank you,
Ricardo

Small point- Kugel is a ball top. Spikes are the pointy ones.– not trying to sound like a know it all.

Look here is M15 kugel from the ground on front line with the same distance between holes. And one more spike with non simmetric distance. Interesting is how kugel base was fixed on the erzatz steel pickelhaube. It had false pressformed Splinte on the base of spike, but the helmet center hole was rolled with neck of kugel. (I hope my english is clear :)) And half of the kugel ball is magnetic, half is brass.

Ahh!..........here is the same wich Lost Skeleton's share in the forum. :)

Gentlemen,
The thread is concerning the assymetrical holes in the spike of my newly acquired M15. In my ignorance as someone new to this field, I improperly called the spike a kugel vice spitze or spike. I thought that I was using the correct term but was subsequently corrected by several members on this forum. My command of Spanish and English is much better than my understanding of German (which is non-existent).

That said, it appears that there are other examples of assymetrical vent holes evident on kugels and spitzes of this pickelhaube model as per the previous post from our fellow collector in Latvia, allaying my fear that I might be in possession of a replacement part. This looks like another example of wartime production quality degradation.

Karel: Who's Jack? ... or am I being too nosey? :P

Leone: Yes your English is juuuuuussssst fine!

My opinion: A quirk of mass production... uneven vent holes. :-k

Ricardo,

I wish I had a dollar for every time I've been corrected on this forum. It's part of being associated with knowledgeable people who are willing to share their interest. I'm always glad for their advice / corrections and you are doing just fine. We're here to learn more about this topic and share our insights.

:D Ron

Exactly....all corrections made here are for educational purposes and not personal. There are thousands of details in this Imperial German collection area, no one can remember all the minutiae and endless variations. I make mistakes here all the time, even though I have been collecting since the 1980's.

Joe,
I would love to, however we have some major family events occurring later in the year of which we were just informed. These will take precedence over pursuit of my hobby. My bride, though, is accompanying me later today to a local gun show where I hope to fins some of the missing parts for my M15. I married well!

Regards,
Ricardo

Put it on the calendar for next year Ricardo. It is going to be an annual event for me now that I am retired. The wives get together and do their thing, everyone has a great time.

Brian,
I am retired also and over half through my second career but that doesn't necessarily make the calendar any less busy. I think that I have learned from my father to never fully retire. He is 92 years old and we have an engineering business together. He still puts in an 8-10 hour workday. When I come home from work he has a list waiting for me of things to discuss and accomplish. I guess that is how he remains emotionally and mentally sharp while many of his colleagues have slipped into dementia or passed away.
Anyway, I will pencil in the SoS for next year and hopefully have the opportunity to meet many of you face to face to thank you for your guidance and willingness to share knowledge. You are all gentlemen.

Regards,
Ricardo

Yes Ricardo, your father has it down pat...use it or lose it. Such a simple phrase but so crucial for survival. You have to be active both mentally and physically or you lose it and end up drooling in a wheel chair. Not for me! Again it would be great to meet you and your bride plus any other forum members at this SOS or one in the future.

BS....I have seen you drooling in that thing, especially when you were being swarmed by a crowd of women!! I have told you before that whole chair thing is just a ploy to snag pretty women and primo parking spaces! I know your secret Joey! :D
