Your opinion on this one would be highly appreciated gentlemen:

Eastern Europe is unfortunalety infamous for its replicas of German WW1 and WW2 militaria and the seller's feedback score doesn't inspire any additional confidence but I would love to learn how to distinguish fake Stahlhelm liners from original ones on my own... Also, regarding size, I suppose a S64 as featured here would fit an ET64 shell, correct?

I was pretty sure about that due to origin of item and seller feedback but I need to know what are the physical giveways for learning purposes.
 
Here's one that looks OK although not in the best of shapes...
Seller says it's 7" in diameter and my shell is a size 64 (E.T.64).
What do you gents think?

I'm afraid it might be too small as seller says it's 7" in diameter when my (fake) inner liner band measures 8" (back to front) and about 6.5" (sideways)...

Anyway, it sold for almost $125 which isn't too bad if you're really sure it would fit your shell (I wasn't)...

What do you think of this one? It's either a complete fake--I don't trust the source--or an unissued/mint liner.
The good thing is it would fit my shell (E.T. 64). However, did they still manufacture full-leather liners in 1917 and would this particular maker ('Schneide Brieg') clash with my shell (Eisen-und Hüttenwerke, AG Thale/Harz)?

Dang it sure looks good. Heck, even if it is a fake, no one will be able to tell! I'd jump this one Ron.

Based on the seller, I am suspicious of the authenticity either and I agree its probably a well-made fake.

Here's another great looking too-good-to-be-true liner, also from Latvia, also a size 64--the most convenient--and also marked and dated (1917)...
Enough 'coincidences' to make it suspicious, not to mention the date itself since by that year, leather liner bands were replaced with metal ('M1917')...

Looks like the Germans 'parachuted' many liners to their men in Latvia during the great war...

That's 3 complete liners (incl. padding pillows) in great shape and fully marked in less than 1 month, all from the same 'shoe factory'... What are the odds?! :evil: :twisted: :-k
 
Im sure there must be a catch here, but they really are very good if they are remakes. Perhaps a box from storage?
I had an Austrian helmet with an "original" liner for about 2 days once. On the pics it looked fantastic, but once I opened the box, you could see the old stitch holes, with new stitching crossing it. Was a lovely job, but not original. That came from eastern europe somewhere as well.
 
I once had a girlfriend who came from Riga, like this helmet liner. She looked really good and was sweet, but somehow wasn't the real deal either. I am a bit suspicious of the Otto Koch stamp in the band of the liner in question. Particularly the "O's", which are almost round instead of being oblong, as I've seen in original examples. I have photos of an example in my collection, dated 1916 also, but with the date above the name. This is in the liner of a square dip M-16, and is totally original. I am sorry, but I do not know how to post photos here.

I could email them to any interested party, if so desired. Just send a PM.

Could it be possible that stocks of (abandoned or captured) M16-18 helmets were recycled for use post-war with new fittings/liners (same as with the Finnish Army), hence the availability of their original German liners? Anything in the literature about this?
 
Heres the stamp from the ebay one. Those `o` s are not correct. Well certainly diff from the two examples above. A modern typeset I think?
