M17 Stalhelm with Camouflage

Although described as an M16, this one looks more like an M17 to me because of the metal liner band instead of one made of leather... too bad it's missing everything else and the seller doesn't ship to wild unchartered territories like Canada [-(
Anyway, this hasn't sold on eBay for a while now. Do you think its camouflage is legit? It looks too good for being almost 100 years old and doesn't match the inside of the helmet which is in a rather bad shape & has lost its liner pads, doesn't it? Yet again, one could argue TLC was constantly given to the outside shell while the inside was left to age... :-k

Hard to tell with those photos. It may be that he only oiled/varnished the outside. The inside would brighten up considerably with the same treatment but , again, photos aren't good enough to tell.

Keep in mind that the "M17" is a misnomer. There is a M16 and M18. The liner band being metal doesn't change it from being a M16.

I agree on the M17 not having existed but it's always easier to use than having to actually refer to it as an 'M16 with a metal liner band instead of leather'...
I really like that camo but it's so risky with these things (especially on eBay) and besides, I'd rather keep on hunting till I find a complete example (with liner & hopefully a good chinstrap).
There's an M16 camo model which is closer to what I want although the colors aren't as sharp and bright (see my other post).
 
Here's another "M17"; only the seller sheds doubts about the liner & metal band...

As for the camo paint, with the Germans being so organized and neat/picky, was it normal to leave so much paint 'drippings' as seen on the shell in one of the shots? :-k

And another one... This is really hard to tell! The liner looks like it's "been there" but then again you never know about the paint.

Ron - I like this one. Liner is very good and you see how it has a sort of overall darkness - nice patina. Not sure why it is still at $305 though it has been viewed 385 times. It probably will get sniped and my guess is it will go for $650.

Gents, here's one I'm considering and I would appreciate your feedback on it...
For my part, here's what I've noted:
> M16 with the 1917 metal sheet band and Stahlhelm
> Mid-Late war leather paddings (lighter color; forgot if it was calf-skin?)
> Camouflage colors: Green + ochre yellow + rust brown separated by finger-wide black lines as per regulations (although the latter seem larger than a finger here, don't they?)
> Camouflage pattern: Often found variant combining rounded shapes with some regulation sharp corners
Any red flags you think?

Don't forget we're on your side....but......

My novice 2 cents is that this is a fake. The yellow and red are far too bright for the age and the black divider line is far too thick. Not that some black lines weren't thicker than others, just that together with the brightness of the color it fairly screams fake to me.

Hey Eric, I've seen originals with colors that look like they were painted yesterday, or almost... (e.g. Kaiser's Bunker). As for the dividing lines being too thick, I had noticed that too but again, there's plenty original variants out there and I'm pretty sure not all platoon commanders checked their emails on a daily basis to ensure their men were up to date when it came to directives (ISO standards) :)
Damn camo helmets! They're now on top of my list of least favorite items when looking for authentic German militaria :-x
