M1915 lobster tail helmet question

I have a M1915 lobster tail helmet ( I think), the question is, is there difference models or was it up to the maker on the shape of the visor and the lobster tail. I have seen up swing visor and one piece lobster tail. My visor is not up swing and the lobster tail is not one piece.

I think the manufacturers of the metallhelms all had their own individual aesthetic characteristics. I can see slight stylistic differences between Weissenberger, Helbing & Sackwitze, Juncker, and especially Lachmann, to name but a few.

Can you look inside the helmet at the center top, where the spike base attaches. Is ther a name and date there?

James

The inside top is marked “Schulz & Holdefleiss --Berlin N. 1916” (I think ) the edge of the tail is marked “56”. I don’t know how to post photos, but they are at:

Thats a pretty nice mannschaften Kurassier helmet. Looks like he took a whack around the left ear-'ole.....is there a number stamped near the right-hand side post at all? I think JzP helmets sometimes have the regimental number stamped there, not sure if these do, though?

A nice piece.

I do not see any other marks. There is a dent at the left post, but my cousin is a metal-smith(at a factory) and he said that it should pop out. I am looking for a spike, I have read on other posting that leather spike helmet was worn without a spike, was this type of helmet ever worn without a spike? I know that this helmet have some condition issues , ( dent, part.Liner ) but I have been wanting one for a long time, and with my limited funds, it is the best that I could afford ( and it will be the center of my display).

A nice model 1915 kurassier helmet lacking the spike. The 56 stamping on the interior edge at the back is the size of the helmet 56cm. Presumably the Kurassiers must have worn them without the spike top but I have never seen any pics of this. I was showing the A&E Biography of The Fatal Attraction of Adolph Hitler today to my class and there was some excellent film footage of M15 leather helmets being worn by an MG crew. They had the M15 style covers on their helmets but no spikes. Brian

Thanks for all of the good information. I am still looking for the spike. Should I be looking for a special steel spike (from some of the photos they seems longer) or would a standard spike be correct.
