M1917 Ford ambulance

This is great Gus. Very impressive. I had a question which you almost answered in your last post above: how was it designed inside? Only beds? How many? Any other medical equipment? Do you have period photographs?

Hey Bruno,
The bottom of the back was just a bare floor, with a low rail in the middle to direct the stretchers to stay on their side. The third stretcher was carried on rails that folded down from each wall of the body. There are seats that fold down from each side to carry ambulatory patients. The load is three stretcher cases in the back or four seated, it is possible to carry a mixed load as well, and there is room for one more by the driver, two if the are really small.

Here is the only good photo of the rear I have come across, there is an angle iron frame around the center hole that doubles as a step. The holes in the tail gate are for the handles of the stretchers, ther are three in the front wall of the body, and the handles extend under the driver's seat. This allows the load to be as far forward as possible, and less body in the back to save weight.

This is what mine looks like, as you can see, I have not added the seats or upper rails.

Here is a view with the tial gate closed, showing the canvas pockets that cover the stretcher handles

Gus,

I have a chest that was brought back by somebody in an ambulance company. It is a German box. However you can see the name of the guy and his unit. This came along with a really nice helmet that was stored inside. Janet might be willing to force me to donate this to your ambulance project. I don't know if you would even be interested. It is not nice and clean and beautiful like Karel's.

 Janet is the BEST This is an ambulance company that I had not found before, but there is some information available, it served with the 90th Division and saw so heavy action. It may not have the art work of Karel's, but it is still very interesting, I will gas up the truck:)

Joe as long as you are giving stuff away, you know what I want, I want you to give Gus the helmet that was in the trunk!!!!

"Gus,

Are you driving to SOS? If so I will bring the chest up to you there. Do not want to mail it. I can fill it full of goodies on the way up and we can sell them!

James–fat chance.

Yes, Joe we are driving. Postage would be a killer on that.

A friend came over this evening, and wanted a ride in the ambulance, I do not have the electric lights working, so I put oil in the oil lamps, it is surprising how much light they put out.

Do they have electricity in that part of Idaho?

Heck yes, we have had them new fangled lights for a couple of years now, I still have to run my computer on coal though. years ago, we had a young girl from Poland spend a year with us, she wondered why we have kerosene lamps all over the house, until the power went off that is.

I finished the upper litter rails and the benches in the back, just a bit of canvas work, water tank, and reupholster the seat to finish.

I have made a little more progress on the ambulance, here is a photo showing the rear cover over the upper stretcher.

and here is a photo showing the canvas rolled up and how the upper stretcher sticks out the back of the body.

I got the back rest and the seat upholstered with the proper material, and found the correct horn.

It is coming together, there are still a few details that I need to finish, such as the water tank on the driver's side, and the side curtains, if I could get it parked long enough to do that, it would not take long, but it is fun to drive.
