M95 Prussian Belt Buckles - Pioneer silver?

Gents,

Just picked up this 'hate belt', the first I have owned. Seems like a particularly nice piece. The buckle is a 95 pattern but the body is silver rather than brass. Even in my three gigantic reference books on Imperial German uniforms, each of which weighs about 25lb, and on Tony's site, there is no reference to Prussian belt buckle being silver when the uniform buttons were also silver. Was this the case? and, if so, why no reference to it.

Hi Mike,
Has the buckle been plated or painted? Please can I have a pic of the back of it? If it's right it's really nice and as you've said I've never seen a reference to it in any book.

It does not appear to be plated, it is solid metal, same on both sides. I am away at the moment and will take some back photos when I get home.
 
Richard, I checked the buckle again. It is solid silver metal all the way through. There are enough scratches on the surface that if it had been plated there would be brass showing, but no, even the worn sections are a consistent colour with the body.

Sounds like it's fine to me. A nice rareity. I wonder if it's a private purchase buckle?
Incidently the 'hate belt' is one of the nicest I've seen for along time. Somebody put a lot of love into it. If that's possible with a 'hate belt'!!!
Any chance of some more pics of the rest of the belt?

Sorry Mike, I do not. I tend not to say anything if I have nothing to contribute. A silver line Preußen buckle makes absolutely no sense to me at all. No idea.
 
A friend e-mailed me the following:

The buckle on the forum is not a military buckle. It was worn by Prussian Customs & Gendarmerie personnel and is described in Gott Mit Uns!, Les Boucles de Ceinture Allemandes 1870 - 1945 by Francis Catella, page 31.
