M95 Saxon ersatz made of...

Dear All,

A recent one, this time a Saxon ersatz pickelhaube made of cardboard and vulkanfiber !

Not an usual one to find, especially in good condition and complete. No apparent modifications and original ersatz liner made of some kind of oiled cloth material, with a velvet feel to its reverse. The interior is as it should be: cardboard painted in a colour intended to imitate the leather normally found on leather helmets.

Both visors are stitched to the body and are made of vulkanfiber, black in and out, like the ones found on EM Prussian vulkanfiber.

Cockades are (although a bit rusty) original non-serrated ones with the typical Saxonian notch to fit onto the side lugs.

An interesting variant and not often encountered.

Best

Alex

Saxons are well known for the big variety of Ersatz helmets they have produced

Beautiful helmet that remembers me a similar one in my collection. Cardboard and vulcan fibers as yours. Liner is a kind of oiled cloth material too.
Also both cockades are Ersatz. They are very light and non magnetic! ( maybe aluminium).

I have similar Kokarden on a Saxon helmet, non-magnetic, and made of zinc.
Apparently zinc cockades were common on Saxon helmets, so that is probably what yours are made of.

Both helmets are a fantastic find. Congratulations!

Two great helmets, I'm a big fan of the fiber helmets, they appear to have held up the best over the past 100 years.

Nice helmet, Philippe.

Yours seems to have a slightly different variation of liner. Very interesting.

Those ersatz haubes are my favorite :thumb up: :thumb up:

Please feel free to post more of those weird Saxon helmets. There are so many variations.

Best

Philippe,
What is the diameter of the cockades on your helmet.
They look slightly oversized just like the ones on my Saxon.

John :)

John,

Both are exactly 48mm
