Hello. I came across this Grenadier helmet on the German ebay site.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6263936283&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEBI%3AIT&rd=1

Can any of you decifer the stamps on the rear visor? Why two dates?

All comments are, of course, welcome. Hopefully not all helmets on ebay are scams.

"B.A.G" is "Beckleidungs Amt Garde". The other marking seems to be K.F.H. ? It can be "Koenig Friedrich..." but what means the "H"? There were without mistake 7 garde grenadier regiment called "Koenig Friedrich" but no one with something in the name who begins with "H" (Grenadier Rgt Koenig Friedrich Wilhelm IV, Wilhelm I, der Grosse, Wilhelm III, Wilhelm II, Frierich I, Friedrich II)...

Eric,

This is a very interesting one. Grenadier issue helmets are not the most common things. There's nothing wrong with having two stamps. Often it represents a helmet turned back into a depot. In this case, the Mark on the left is BAG. Bekleidungs Amt Garde

That is the depot that issued this item. It was issued in 1907.

The Mark on the right says KF??? 1908. This would be a regimental Mark. Many of the grenadier regiments had a title that was König Friedrich and then some other designation. So the Mark does not tell me which exact Regiment, because I cannot read the third digit. It seems as though there is another Mark on the far left side on top. But I cannot make it out. What is unusual about this is that the marks are on the front visor not the rear visor. That doesn't make it wrong, just unusual.

The cockades on this helmet are also interesting. They appear to be 55 mm single ring the big hole cockades. Of course I have not measured them, but the possibility that they are 55 mm and single rings should send some people scurrying for reasons. Do they belong on this helmet? You should write the seller and ask him to measure the cockades.

I do not know if it is just the lighting or if the solder on the right loop is new. It is the right kind of loop. Maybe it had to be reattached. Maybe it is just a trick of lighting.

I hope we didn't scare you into thinking everything was a fraud on eBay. There are just a bunch of collectors here who are looking out for you. I'm glad you joined us. The fun part about this is that we all give opinions and you have to decide. This was a fun helmet and has been nice break thanks!

Could that "H" be "R"? "KFR" - Kaiser Franz Rgt.2.??? I'm not sure.

Is it my eyes or does that spike and base look like someone's taken a wire brush to it? And whats with that loop fixing inside?

My take is that the mark is K.E.R. which would mean Konigin Elisabet Regiment, 3rd Garde Grenadier Regiment. This would account for the Garde depot mark. Of course this also means that the eagle should have a Garde star, which leads me to believe it has been replaced. Steve

Hi:
I checked this helme out. I am confused about the first foto with the red background and frontal view. On my computer all the fitings are silver ie white metal. All the other fotos in the series show brass fittings. Do the rest of you see this or isit just me? The middle initial on the stamping could either be E or F from what I see on my flat screen monitor. I am more inclined to go with F as the middle letter. The reason for this is that there are dots or periods between each letter and an E would have a longer horizontal on the bottom whereas F has a smaller base to it. Part of this is based on the font that was used for the original stamping. Joe, I know it looks like the Regt markings are on the front visor but in actual fact they are on the back. The flash that was used to take the pic turned the edge of the rear visor really shiney making it look like visor trim. Brian
