Gentlemen, what do you think of this one which looks complete?

Was it normal for the metal parts to be painted black on slings as well during WW1? Leather also seems lacquered, doesn't it?

Hi Steve,
That's what I thought as well but then again, who said cross-hatching or chequered leather was a norm for all German Imperial slings and not maker-specific?
Is there something in the relevant literature on this?

Ron: For a detailed discussion of Gew98 slings, to include drawings and specifications for both the old and new model slings, see pages 279 through 286 of
Rifle and Carbine 98, M 98 Firearms of the German Army from 1898 to 1918 , by Dieter Storz.

The book seems to be pretty valuable:

Interlibrary loan might be an option.

The book is available in either German or English text directly from the publisher in Austria for 95 Euro plus shipping.

Thanks both for the tips.
While I get the book, do you agree with Steve on this example not being German?
