Mecklenburg M1842

This looks like a nice early piece but I have the impression that the plate and cockade do not match the rest of the helmet. Also the cockade is on the wrong side for an early helmet. I am not sure about the round visor, not correct for Prussia but I don't know about other states.

This made me wonder in general, did most other German states introduce the early spiked helmets before 1891? Is there a table who introduced the spike when?

With the Mecklemburgh Strelitz one in mind, then it would have the wrong spike also...

Ron, the M42 Mecklemburg-Schwerin helmet had exactly the same spike as the M42 prussian helmet.
But the M67 M-Schwerin helmet had this particular spike with a little ball on top.

Okay. Good info. Do you know when Mecklemberg-Schwerin went to the spike with the anti-eye-poking-out-ball on it? Around 1860 or so, the back to a regular spike?

Ron,
Mecklemburg-Schwerin soldiers wore the M42 pattern Pickelhaube from 1848 on until 1860. Then a special cap (similar to a russian cap) was adopted until about 1868. The new helmet then was the M67 pattern with this particular "small ball top".
With the M95 pattern, Mecklenburg-Schwerin adopted the wellknown fluted spike. (FR 90 and I + III GR 89 only). Mecklenburg-Strelitz (II/GR89) helmets had the classic normal rounded spike.
