Metalhelm and other headgear manufacturers

Here's a post I brought over from the Pickelhaubes section of this website. It's from a seventeen year old post, and I thought I'd bring it up here. It gives a pretty thorough list of helmet makers in Germany from the WW1 era.

I'm familiar with Otto Nachtigall, Schultz & Holdefleiss, and C.E. Juncker, as they are manufacturers of three of my four metalhelme, and my one standard leather pickelhaube. I hope others find this interesting and useful.

Yes, a valuable list which was assembled years ago with contributions from many members.
I found this and thought it was worth reposting, in order to keep it current since it's almost 20 years old. Not saying any improvements need to be made; just wanted to keep it in a current format for people who may have questions.

My apologies Pontrest, I should have thanked you as well. We also have a list of regimental helmet markings with description and photos which goes along with this.

In my experience, for the most part, manufacture's marks take the form of a round ink stamp up in the crown of the shell. Unfortunately, they are often very faint and hard to read. Their location adds to the problem of reading them or taking a photograph. There is a Saxe manufacturer Clemens, which stamped it's name on the underside of the front visor trim...the only firm that I know of which did so. My comments here, are directed to OR's helmets, not officers. The long list above shows us that as significant part of the German economy was involved equipping their armed forces.

Nice helmet. The rear visor was splitted and stiched together because it is an issue-helmet right? It is the first time I mention it (y)
Sandy most older pattern leather helmets are sewn up the rear. On M1867, the companies converting older helmets to 1860 flipped them around so the eagle Wappen would cover the stitching. However, the rear visor was not split, so as you said, probably a repair. That’s a good solid M1860 requiring very little work.

Tony are you sure? The stitches of the thicker thread is 100% in a direct line to the seam of the shell on the backside. To me it looks like a planned work sewn up at the same time. I would love to hold it in my hand and to investigate it more closely :)

Brian, where might I find this list of regimental helmet markings?

Here's a website many of you contributed to, I'm sure. It has pictures of the various markings.

On the list...HO (then unknown) MANN & SOHN may be W HELTMANNI & SOHN MAYEN. This mark is almost always found on the tail of the helmet and is always in an arch with the City of Mayen at the bottom of the arch. I have numerous examples of this mark on different pickelhaubes I have seen ove the years. Just as an example, the helmet I own was made by Hans Römer –Neu Ulm, and also has this mark on the tale. As with many of the helmets I have examined, they are made by others, then bear this marking as a white stamp. Recently on a WW1 P08 Luger holster that I examined, the name, HOHMANN & SOHN was stamped with KAISERLAUTERN below the arch...maybe SOHN had two different partners? Just info.
