I have never seen that before either, sometimes soldiers improvised, like f/i this mount in the following picture.

That makes sense, it’s what I would do, you don’t want to give away your position.

My guess would be a muzzle cover, made to fit over the booster, flash hider and front armor.

i once came across a armor that fittet on top of the section that is water cooled
at that time i did not now wat its purpose was for
now i do but hell it is years to late to still be beating my head against the wall
never seen one since

even looks like he is sleeping under his gun
