Hi all. I'm visiting NY in a couple of weeks from the UK and wondered if there are any good militaria shops in the area, particularly for Imperial German headgear? Any suggestions gratefully received

There are very few militaria shops in the United States these days, but there was one shop in Queens - just across the river from Manhattan. I do assume you mean New York City as opposed to the entire state! The shop is/was called Sparr's Militaria and it was located off the R-train line. You can take that three stops in I think, but it has been many years since I last headed out that way. I don't know whether it is worth the trip, but you can stop and have Greek food while in the neighborhood.

I'd really suggest you visit the Intrepid, a WWII aircraft carrier located on the Hudson River, and there is of course the New York Metropolitian Musem of Art located on Fifth Ave. It has an impressive Arms & Armor Gallery. That is impressive. Otherwise, there isn't a lot in the way of "military" history in New York City.

If you are on 42nd Street stop in at Kaufman's Army and Navy. It is just off 8th Ave. Tell Jim the owner that I sent you there and tell him I said hello.

Safe travels.

Thanks Peter. Yes I'm in NYC so I'll certainly give Sparrs a ring to see if they've got anything. I'll also say hi to Jim if I'm passing - thanks for the other suggestions too, looks like I'll have a busy time! All the best

I remember doing a presentation in Manhattan at the seventh regimental armory. There was a lot of history/Museum types of stuff from the seventh Regiment. It's been years but I think there was actually a restaurant in there so I imagine entry is open. That was interesting but only an hour or so.
