Missing spike?

There are a few more parts missing. Spike, visor trimm, rear spine, chinscales and cockades. Especially the chinscales are hard to find, because they have to match the size of the helmet.
But the helmet is far from being worthless in this condition. Look on ebay under the search term "pickelhaube" (or ebay.fr with search term „casque à pointe“) and you will see that incomplete officer helmets still bring some money.

Thanks a lot. What supposed to be the original colour of the metal? Was this golden, or steel treated with me protection? I see some green rust, but also log off regular metal rust. Can this be cleaned?

I wouldn’t clean it if you want to sell it, because most collectors want authenticity.
However, the metal parts of this officer helmet were fire gilded . You can clean the metal parts as follows:
  • Mix fine chalk and alcohol to a pulp. Clean the metal parts very gently and not too tightly with a Q-Tip and this pulp. Take care that the leather doesn‘t come in contact with it. After the alcohol has evaporated, the chalk can carefully wiped off with a soft paintbrush or soft brush.

The fittings on this were fire gilt brass and this was a Prussian officer helmet originally. There are many photos here of complete Prussian officer helmets, so do some research. I would also recommend looking at: The Kaiser's Bunker website which is the best English source for pickelhauben on the net! On the inside of this helmet, there should be a leather sweatband to which is stitched a ribbed silk liner. Judging by the condition of this helmet, the silk is probably missing. There are also nickel plated fitting versions of these helmets worn by pioneer battalions. Finally, welcome to the forum, there is much to learn here! 👍
