I'm far away from being an expert, but I don't like that I'm looking. In the best of the hypotheses...recuperated (and not good do).

I have never owned a Miter, but I think this one looks pretty good to me, I have no idea on the price etc.???

Seller has Private feedback etc. that would scare me.

I have one of these, and this one looks good to me. It appears the stitching that secures the liner to the front of the body has rotted away, possibly due to being soaked with polishing solutions. The missing black finish and the tattered condition on the front of the liner where it is rolled on the front of the plate is the biggest drawback that I see. The loose grenade chinstrap retainer will need to be resoldered to its prongs. It is also obviously missing the puschel (pom pom). You can see the tube it slides into in the picture of the interior. I would also ask for better pictures of the chinstraps. Having said all that, it looks like a nice original piece.
If time permits, I will get mine out and do a detailed comparison.
I have no idea if the price is reasonable, but I do know these are fairly scarce.Hope this helps.

Hey all.

Thanks for the replies.

I have asked for better pictures. Hope I can show you them here before the auction ends.

Steve it would be great if you could post some pictures of your mitre.

Not at all Otto! You have great expertise and no reason here to blush! These miters are really difficult to appraise, mainly because large numbers of copies have been made, and many of them a long time ago, for commemorative events. This one looks good to me though but this is a reserved opinion...

Otto,
Don't be so hard on yourself. It's tough to find info on these. I spent years looking at them before I felt comfortable enough to buy one.
In my experience, the First Foot Guards model is more heavily reproduced than the KAR type. I have seen some variations however. I do feel that the miter under discussion here is a genuine issue piece. Construction details are identical to mine, though I haven't yet done a detailed comparison of the front plate and grenades.
Doc, no can do on pics right now, my camera is in need of repair.

Doc,
I still like it. I dug mine out and compared them. Mine has the extra quality private purchase liner (more fingers and square cut ends) which makes sense as it is labeled to a One Year Volunteer, while this one has the issue liner. Mine does not have the piece of material between the liner and frontplate. Perhaps this was inserted for comfort, or to reduce the size. Remember, these were introduced early in the 19th century, so they were in use for a long time. The rivet on the chistrap would seem to be a repair. One test of originality would be head size. You had to be a big boy to get into the KAR, mine fits my size 7 1/2 head perfectly. I have a Garde pickelhaube marked to the KAR (same company no less!) that also fits me. No pinheads in that outfit, at least until they put the helmet on. I would be interested if anyone knows the height requirement.
Construction details appear identical to mine. I see a lot of details I like, such as the dark blue trim material sewn between the frontplate and body, and the subtle mothing.
If you have a copy of Rankin's book, there are some sharp b&w photos of one of these.
In my humble opinion, based on the photos, this is an original issue piece.

Good Luck!
Steve
