Hi

Iam not a expert. But use common sense, email the seller to see he allows inspection time. Reason from the pictures I see , I think this helmet is good .A Very Rare item. I would email Tony and get his thoughts on it.

Eric,
I have an 1842 Prussian reserve officers helmet.
IMHO, the helmet on eBay is a bit of a puzzle. It certainly has the old shell, but some of the hardware appears to be a mix of officer and EM.
I will post pics of my 1842 officers and you can compare.
BTW, officers hardware was fire gilded (or at least mine is) - the pics on ebay don't appear to be officer quality.
The helmet may be genuine, but it is not up to the specs of my 1842 officers helm and I would assume that there should be more similarities than differences, n'est pas?

Here are pics of my 1842 Prussian officers (Reserve cross).

vhawk, (I feel like I am addressing a Navy pilot on the net?)

I wish you had joined earlier and posted your M42 officer. I was in TO last week, I would have pestered you to visit and see it. My personal "Holy Grail" is an issued M42. I see yours has the 1857 75mm Stamped metal Kokarde with silver affixed ring which is what is normally found on surviving examples. The 1842 75mm leather Kokarde w/ silver metal ring and the 1846 75mm silk Kokarde with silver painted ring just did not last well enough. There are other issues as you mentioned with the one on ebay, my concern was that the rear spine did not fit the shell at the bottom and I am reasonably sure the Wappen is actually the M42 converetd to M1860 when the Bandeau was added. With that Bandeau missing it leaves convenient holes to affix the Wappen to a shell like the the original 1842 until it was replaced by screw posts in 1843 etc. Again, thanks for posting your M42 officer, not too many of those in collections. Tony

Hi,

Another point for our discussion: Aulke reproduced M42 and Landwehr M42 Wappen plates in the 70's. About 130DM.

Tony, that would not have been a problem.
Very few of my friends or relatives have any appreciation for my Militaria collection, so I'm happy to show it occasionally to someone who has an appreciation for not only the historical significance of these helmets, but also for the sheer beauty of them.
Send me a PM when you plan another trip to Toronto and we'll try to arrange a visit.
Cheers,
Harry

Kamaraden:
Remy Schaal saw this helmet in the flesh and said he thought is was original. The owner has several helmets that he will eventually post on ebay.

As far as I know I am the only Navy Pilot in this forum right? LOL

My only military experience was a several year stint as a reservist in the Royal Canadian Armoured Corp (RCAC) - Ontario Regiment (when I was a young pup).. :D

Not another Ont.R .There at least 1 other with another to come onto the forum. When were you in?
I do a little work aith the museum now ,if you have not seen it as of late it is worth the trip.

Zipper now I am feeling left out. Don't forget I am in Barrie!! Harry that is a fantastic M42 officer. The height of the shell and spike plus the elongated visor makes these pieces look cartoon like. It is almost as if the M95 has been drawn by a cartoonist who wants to exaggerate certain features. I can not imagine going into battle with one of these things perched on ones' head. Brian

Brian did not mean to miss you nut I eas thinking of ex Ont.Rs.
Ionly dream about haubs like this one. sorry Brian

Mark, I was in the Ont Regt during the 1962 -1964 timeframe.
I remember well the trips to Meaford where they let us fire off hundreds of rounds of high explosive, armoured piercing and smoke shells. And Camp Borden for training on the 105mm British Centurions. And the rifle range at Niagra-on-the-lake.
I didn't realize there was a museum.
I have an Ontario Regt drum with all the battle honours of the Regt.
I'll post a pic of it sometime soon.
Cheers,
