This is a Model 1871 Garde Grenadier helmet:
The helmet is made of very heavy leather and stands just over 10” tall:
Since this helmet pre-dates 1897 there is only one Kokarde. The Kokarde is stamped metal and measures 51mm:
There is no Kokarde on the left side of the helmet:
The Wappen is stamped heavy gauge brass and is highly detailed:
Garde Grenadier Regiments were not authorized to wear the Garde star until 28 August 1889.
Other Grenadier Regiments adopted this Wappen after the Garde Grenadier were authorized to wear the Garde star. Prior to that period non-Garde Grenadier Regiments wore the Prussian line eagle with FWR cypher, which falsely became known as the “Grenadier Wappen”. Several non-Grenadier Regiments wore the Line Adler with cypher. Some Garde Regiments had a bandeaux that carried over to the Wappen after the Line Adler changed to the swept wing Adler. This change began in 1900 and continued through 1913, depending upon regiment.
This helmet could have been worn by:
1st Garde Grenadier Regt (Kaiser Alexander), Berlin, formed in 1814
2nd Garde Grenadier Regt (Kaiser Franz), Berlin, formed in 1814
3rd Garde Grenadier Regt (Queen Elisabeth), Charlottenburg, formed in 1860
4th Garde Grenadier Regt (Queen Augusta), Berlin, formed in 1860
5th Garde Grenadier Regt was formed in 1897 and would have never worn this Wappen. They would have worn the newer model 1895 swept wing Adler with Garde star since their initial formation.
The rear spine was reintroduced to the Model 1871 after it had been removed on the earlier Model 1867:
The liner is intact and is in relatively good condition.
Note the wider brass on the inside of the front visor indicative of a Model 71:
